NPP begins nationwide pre-primary tour

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party has begun its nationwide pre-primary tour.

The tour, which begins in the Ashanti region, will take the leadership including party flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo, Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey and General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie to all ten regions from Tuesday to the end of the month.

They will meet with regional and constituency executives as well as aspirants to brief them on rules and regulations for the parliamentary primaries which will take place on April 30.

Campaign Manager for the party Boakye Agyarko tells Joy News the tour will help avert the acrimony that characterized previous parliamentary primaries.

“The dialogue will involve setting out the rules and regulations; the dos and dont’s; what we expect of them, what they expect of us; so that we are all clear on what we are going to do in the process.

“We believe that if we have that dialogue it will lower the temperature that normally accompanies such contest, bring the temperature down so we have well organised, orchestrated and peaceful primaries for the selection of our MPs," he said.

He explained the tours will manifest the rules and regulations spelt out on paper in order to ensure fairness and transparency.

Jake cautions NPP Over Nana Adoo’s running mate

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a stern warning to those putting unnecessary pressure on the party and its presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to name a running mate.
The party says it takes a strong position against those who seek to champion one candidate or the other through media lobbying since, according to the National Chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, “The decision will not be made on the basis of organised lobbying.”
This was contained in statement issued and signed by the party chairman in Accra yesterday.
He has therefore advised individuals and group of persons who are championing the cause of certain potential candidates to desist from doing so and rather focus on the real work they have to do on the ground to win both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
He noted the party’s presidential candidate intends to follow tradition and would choose his running’ mate at the final phase of the party’s campaign, saying “this is what we have traditionally done, and this is ‘what we will do this time.”
Article 12(B) of the NPP’s Constitution states that “the’ party’s presidential candidate shall, in consultation with the National Council, nominate the vice presidential candidate.”
Barely a week ago, a leading member of the NPP and Ghana’s immediate past Ambassador to Serbia and Montenegro, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, asked the party to maintain its vice presidential candidate in the 2008 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2012 polls.
He believes the 47-year-old former deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana is the most suitable person for the job since he has virtually all the qualities of a good leader and is already marketed to Ghanaians.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe gave reasons the NPP should choose Dr Bawumia to partner Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2012 elections.
The former diplomat, who was part of Nana Addo’s campaign team, gave a chronology of the trend often used in choosing a running mate for the NPP.
In that regard, he said, “We need someone who shares in the ideals of the party and also blends easily with the flagbearer” noting “Bawumia has shown beyond reasonable doubt that he has more than what it takes to be a running mate.”
He also argued that the two have worked together before, are compatible and understand each other’s philosophy.
Dr Nyaho Tamakloe, who is also a founding member of the NPP, stressed the belief that many others in the NPP shared that sentiment, emphasizing that “at this point in time, only a south-north ticket will be best for the party.”
He however admitted that the tradition of going in for a southerner to pair a northerner or vice versa is not sacrosanct and bound to change anytime.
“If in the near future, those from the other blocks within the party are able to provide a fitting personality who can win the day for us notwithstanding where he or she is coming from, why not, r will give that idea my support. But as things stand, now, it is the northern block all the way, he said.
“I might, be wrong but I believe strongly, the right choice for Nana Addo again is Bawumia. He is the right material for this post. This is a man with no inordinate ambition, hardworking and skilful. Nana Addo knows what he wants but if asked to pick for him, I would go in for Bawumia,” he underscored.

Akufo-Addo Storms Atiwa

Thursday, August 26, 2010*:- It was a joyous atmosphere in the Atiwa Constituency and its environs when Nana Akufo-Addo arrived in the area to canvass for support for the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, Mr. Kwesi Amoako-Attah in the upcoming bye election.

Amidst spontaneous cheers and jubilations from hundreds of residents who thronged to the streets to meet Nana Akufo-Addo and his entourage including Mr. Amoako Attah, Hon. O.B Amoah , Muncta Bamba, National Organizer of the NPP, Mr. Lord Commey, Former National Organiser of the NPP and all Regional and Constituency Executives.

Akufo-Addo’s first point of call was the New Jejeti Town where he received a hero’s welcome from market women who abandoned their wares to meet him on his arrival there.

Amidst brass band music and dancing, the crowd which quickly increased within minutes, just as Nana Akufo-Addo arrived and walked through the area to greet the residents and also paid a courtesy call on the Krontihene for Jejeti, Nana Kojo Odame.

The atmosphere became intense in Akyem Sekyere, Abakoase, Subiriso and Abomosu as hundreds of residents gathered at the outskirts of their respective towns and danced to NPP composed songs on Nana’s arrival.

Dozens of children were seen upon Nana’s arrival screaming ‘NANA OOO NANA”. Some party faithfull’s who could not hide the joy for the arrival of the NPP leadership besieged Nana Akufo-Addo’s vehicle for several minutes before he addressed a mini durbar to solicit for votes for the NPP in the upcoming by election in the Atiwa Constituency.

The NPP supporters also expressed their appreciation to the party delegates for re-electing Nana Akufo-Addo once more to contest the 2012 election Mr. Kwesi Amoako Attah to contest the Atiwa seat on the ticket of NPP.

In his message to the electorates in the constituency Nana Akufo-Addo disclosed that he was a native of the Atiwa Constituency since his late mother hails from Abomosu town, a suburb of Atiwa and therefore called on them to see him as one of them.

Nana Akufo-Addo described the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Atiwa Constituency as the best candidate among all his contenders due to his excellent track record as a Presiding Member for the Atiwa district.

“If there is any Candidate among those contesting the Atiwa Seat who can better articulate your problems in Parliament for prompt action then it is Mr. Kwesi Amoako-Atta who has served Atiwa as an Assembly Member and a Presiding Member for eight years” He said.

The NPP Parliamentary Candidate according to Nana Akufo-Addo has already proven his competence over the years at the district assembly and the entire constituency hence the need to elevate him to status of a Member of Parliament to continue with his good work at the legislature.

The Atiwa By election, Nana Akufo-Addo noted was a litmus test to show the ruling NDC evidence of their low popularity nationwide. He therefore called on the electorates to vote massively for the NPP to send a strong signal to the ruling NDC that majority of Ghanaians have lost confidence in the Mills administration and its unfulfilled campaign promises.

Mr. Kwesi Amoako-Attah appealed to the electorates to consider his immense contribution for the area whiles he was an Assembly Member and the Current Presiding Member of the district.

More to this he said he is well be informed about the development needs of the area and all he needs was the electoral supports for him to champion their course in parliament.

The Atiwa seat was declared vacant on the death of Kwasi Ankama, the MP and the bye-election has been slated for 31st August, 2010.

NDC has failed to deliver on its promises - Akufo Addo

Kwabeng, August 30, GNA - The flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, says the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Government has failed to deliver on its campaign promises.

He said almost 20 months after the NDC led by Professor John Evan Atta Mills took office, little had been done to justify the Better Ghana promise he made to Ghanaians.

Nana Akufo Addo said the hardships Ghanaians were going through due to high increase in utility tariffs, was a clear indication that the government had failed.

The NPP flag bearer was addressing a rally at Kwabeng on Sunday to climax the party's campaign activities towards the Atiwa by-election scheduled for Tuesday August 31.

The Atiwa by-election became necessary as a result of the death of its Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Kwasi Annoh Ankamah, a few weeks ago in London.

Nana Akufo-Addo, therefore, called on Ghanaians to show the NDC the exit come 2012, to pave way for the NPP to come and continue the good works it started.

He indicated that the only party that could change the fortunes of the country was the NPP considering its performance between 2001 and 2008.

Nana Akufo Addo said it was unfortunate that the National Health Insurance Scheme which was implemented by the NPP was no more functioning well.

The National Organizer of the NPP, Alhaji Moctar Bamba, on his part urged the electorate to vote massively for the NPP candidate, Mr Kwasi Amoako Attah, to continue the good work the late MP started.

He cautioned the NDC to desist from any acts that may mar the beauty of the election.

Mr Bamba said the NPP was ready to meet the NDC boot for boot in the upcoming by-election and beyond.

The rally attracted almost all the top hierarchy of the leading opposition party, including its General Secretary, Mr Owusu Afriyie, also known as 'Sir John'.
